Love Stories
21 for 21
The impetus for this collection of columns is my granddaughter, Lucy Rose. Lucy was born nearly 21 years ago with an extra chromosome. She has Down syndrome, a doctor said. We cried when we were told.
These columns, written at different times in Lucy’s life, are about our journey with Lucy. An alternate title for this collection could have been, “If We Knew Then What We Know Now.”
This is the reason why I collected 21 (people with Down syndrome have three copies of the 21st chromosome ) of the many columns that have showcased Lucy’s life: to assure parents, grandparents, siblings, family and friends, who are just beginning this journey, that it’s going to be okay.
That it’s going to be better than ok.
